I'm ashamed to admit that i only found out about this website today and by accident. You see, I would not be here but for that serum run. My father and three siblings survived that time of helpless fear and the following year, my grandparents relocated to Indiana. I came upon this site while researching decendents of Balto, after my father held my daughters attention for hours today with the story of how our family came to be in Nome, and ending with that serum run and the family moving to the US. And sad disappointment to learn he was neutered. In Breeding circles at least, has anything of the original bloodline survived of either Fritz or Togo and their dam? I couldn't imagine a more fitting companion for my father who's at the end of a long life. Thank you for what you've done here, I showed this to my father, who smiled and asked me to thank you for such a wonderful memorial and walked away with tears streaming down his cheeks, as I have as I write this.
Elke Matthes says...I am fascinate from the true Story of Balto. I bought the animated Films on DVD from it. It would be great when there also would be a film about it with real Dogs, like Huskey. This would be a great film for Movie.
In fact, Elke, there is a production in Hollywood right now, developing a live-action film version of Gay & Laney Salisbury's book The Cruelest Miles (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1254654). Should be out soon!

Spirit says...I LOVE this site!!!!!! I just found it today! I hope I don't get thrown out but what Balto did has NOTHING to do withthis ridiculous "Iditarod" they have!!! In my opinion the dogs aretreated terribly! The money and glory is for the greedy mushers!
My daughter was blessed to see Balto's monument in NY a few years back!
Also, given the fact that those mushers put years of training, money and dedication into their craft, the winner's "purse" is, as far as I am aware, rather small compensation.
Besides, if you actually have read the history of the serum run, as well as that of the mail carriers of the Alaskan frontier (and of the dogs in the care of Alaskan, Canadian and Siberian natives), you would clearly find that those dogs were subject to far greater hardship and toil than a modern-day racing dog is.

There is nothing on this website to suggest that the history of the serum run has anything whatsoever to do with the Iditarod. However, your concerns about the Iditarod team dogs are misplaced. There are strict protocols for care of the dogs - mandatory stops for checks by veterinarians, required periods of rest, strict demands upon a musher should a dog show injury or excessive fatigue, etc.
I suggest you look more into the Iditarod and its rules and protocols before jumping to conclusions about it. And I say that as a person who only has a passing interest in it.
